چکیده

This paper presents work carried out for a project to develop haptic technologies that includes finger/hand manipulation and locomotion. It is well known that sense of touch is inevitable for understanding the real world. The last decade has seen significant advance in development of haptic interface. However, methods for implementation of haptic interface are still in try-and-error. Compared to visual and auditory displays, haptic interface has not been used in everyday life. This paper introduces issues and solutions in haptic interface through 18-years history of research activities done by the author.

Designing with Haptic Feedback

Haptic feedback is a design element for human-computer interfaces, and this paper discusses when and how it can be used to best effect in interactive applications. It begins with consideration of the unique attributes of the touch sense in physiological and psychological terms, and the nature of information and control that touching provides. It reviews where active touching helps, by setting f...

content and the comprehension of learned concepts. Based on this body of research, Segal, Black, and Tversky (2010) showed that gestural interfaces that incorporate the haptic aspect of touching the interface and manipulating the objects by using sensori-motor input could benefit users‟ comprehension of learned concepts. They hypothesized that by touching the objects on a screen directly with a...

The effect of light touch on balance control during overground walking in healthy young adults

Balance control is essential for safe walking. Adding haptic input through light touch may improve walking balance; however, evidence is limited. This research investigated the effect of added haptic input through light touch in healthy young adults during challenging walking conditions. Sixteen individuals walked normally, in tandem, and on a compliant, low-lying balance beam with and without ...

Haptic display of visual images

We describe an implemented system for touching 3D objects depicted in visual images using a two dimensional, force-re ecting haptic interface. The system constructs 3D geometric models from real 2D stereo images. The force feedback at each position is computed to provide the sensation of moving a small ball over the surface of the 3D object.
